An Eclectic Approach to Becoming a Writer

Eclectic Writer

It’s none of their business that you have to learn to write. Let them think you were born that way.

– Ernest Hemingway

A question that I often come across on homeschool forums is what can you do to help  a struggling writer. I had a struggling writer for many years, and now that he is 16 and thinking about college he is debating majoring in writing…

Service Learning Mission: Planting the seeds of compassion

Aristotle wisely said that educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all. I strongly believe in this…

A Homeschool Dad Tells About His Recent Service Project in Guatemala

pic1

As some of you may know, service and volunteerism are part of our family’s philosophy. Blair, my wife and co-founder of SEA Homeschoolers, has previously written about this aspect of our family on her blog and here on SEA. In fact, as I’m writing this, she and our son Sean are in downtown San Diego helping newly naturalized citizens register to vote as they exit their final ceremony with their citizenship documents in hand. I was there with them last month, and it is awesome to see the excitement and enthusiasm on the faces of these new U.S. citizens. Many of them are escaping persecution or poverty in their native countries and are simply looking for an opportunity to create a better life for their children…

HOMESCHOOLING – THE EARLY YEARS

2092_45388615921_7210_n

I have been part of the online homeschool community for a number of years, and I often come across posts from a parent who is panicked about whether their young child or children are doing enough school work. Often the posts will list all the curriculum the parent has purchased and planned for the year and then go on to discuss how frustrated both the parent and the child are becoming with their school day. Sometimes the child becomes grumpy and uncooperative, sometimes the parent feels like all they are doing is yelling at the child, and it is obvious to me that everyone is miserable…

The Best Method to Use for Learning Is the One that Works

Blair's pic for articleThe first time I thought about how others learn best was 40 years ago. I went to high school in Conroe, Texas, which is outside of Houston. Our Spanish teacher recruited several of us to volunteer with her church to assist migrant farmers who were illiterate and/or did not speak English. Our job was to help the men learn to read. Working with them was a powerful experience. It is rare for a young person to be made aware of how important knowledge is for adults who don’t have it. Even when parents push you to do well in school, it isn’t the same. They also push you to feed the dog, be nice to your sister, and clean your room. For most kids, myself included, the rationale to do these tasks all seem about the same…

Living Books and How to Choose Them

 LivingBooks&HowtoChoose

What makes a book “living?”

I should start out by explaining what I mean when I call a book “living.” I know you may be thinking, “Doesn’t everyone teach with books?” Well, yes and no. I’m referring to what Charlotte Mason called “living books.” I am of the belief that what actually makes a book “living” can be subjective. But the basic idea is that a living book is one that is written by an author that cares about the subject matter which he or she writes about. The author will write about his or her subject matter with a love and enthusiasm which excites the imagination and compels you to care about what you are reading. These are the books that will have lasting meaning and memories in the mind. The kinds of books that would stand the test of time…

Why “Neutral” Science Isn’t Neutral

Are there any science types reading this title wondering who I am? Or do you know who I am and think I’ve finally lost it? I am not talking about science as it is practiced and taught at most universities throughout the United States. I’m talking about the special brand of “neutral” science found in the homeschool community.

dna-Neutral Science
The “neutral” science I’m referring to is science that suffers from omission…
