Service Learning Mission: Planting the seeds of compassion

Aristotle wisely said that educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all. I strongly believe in this…

HOMESCHOOLING – THE EARLY YEARS

2092_45388615921_7210_n

I have been part of the online homeschool community for a number of years, and I often come across posts from a parent who is panicked about whether their young child or children are doing enough school work. Often the posts will list all the curriculum the parent has purchased and planned for the year and then go on to discuss how frustrated both the parent and the child are becoming with their school day. Sometimes the child becomes grumpy and uncooperative, sometimes the parent feels like all they are doing is yelling at the child, and it is obvious to me that everyone is miserable…

From Soup to Nuts: A Secular, Eclectic, Academic Approach to Homeschooling

Wouldn’t it be fun to spend the week sharing tips, strategies, and stories about handcrafting an education?

Have you ever had a situation where the best way to learn something didn’t coincide with the easiest way to teach it?

Let’s talk about travel and service projects! Where have you been, or where do you want to go? Have you done any service projects? Do you want to do any…

Living Books and How to Choose Them

 LivingBooks&HowtoChoose

What makes a book “living?”

I should start out by explaining what I mean when I call a book “living.” I know you may be thinking, “Doesn’t everyone teach with books?” Well, yes and no. I’m referring to what Charlotte Mason called “living books.” I am of the belief that what actually makes a book “living” can be subjective. But the basic idea is that a living book is one that is written by an author that cares about the subject matter which he or she writes about. The author will write about his or her subject matter with a love and enthusiasm which excites the imagination and compels you to care about what you are reading. These are the books that will have lasting meaning and memories in the mind. The kinds of books that would stand the test of time…

Why “Neutral” Science Isn’t Neutral

Are there any science types reading this title wondering who I am? Or do you know who I am and think I’ve finally lost it? I am not talking about science as it is practiced and taught at most universities throughout the United States. I’m talking about the special brand of “neutral” science found in the homeschool community.

The “neutral” science I’m referring to is science that suffers from omission…

When Passion and Delight Inspire Learning

Passion&Delight(SEA)

Passion ignites learning.

Much has been said about passion-based learning, but to us it simply means finding or creating as many learning opportunities and experiences to which we expose our son, making sure that he is challenged and engaged in a stimulating environment. What fascinates him and what doesn’t? What does he think about a learning activity?

We employ one gentle rule: “Try it once or twice and then decide if you want to pursue it or not.

This way, we communicate the message that we respect his decision in the end…

Modifying Curriculum for a Twice-Exceptional Child

First of all I want to define what it means to be twice-exceptional. A twice-exceptional student is a student that has been identified as gifted and identified as having a disability or condition. Another way of saying this is:

“This group of gifted children are exceptional both because of their strengths and because of their limitations. Coupled with high intelligence, these children also may have one or more learning disabilities, attention deficit, autism spectrum disorder, emotional or behavior problems, or other types of learning challenges. ”

There is a fairly large population in the homeschool community of twice-exceptional children and teens…

Helping to Save the World: Choosing a Service Project

serviceprojectblog
I think I came out of the womb as a save the world type. I was known early on as the family idealist. My mother would tell the story of me at 2 years of age out in the driveway on a rainy day picking worms off the pavement to put back in the grass, something I still do today. At the age of 11, I volunteered for the first time, canvassing door to door for George McGovern’s presidential campaign. I have volunteered for most of my 44 years since then, working on service projects ranging from those focused on helping people, political issues and candidates, education, and helping animals and the environment…
